Lipstuck

Lipstuck, interactive video installation, 2009

Lipstuck shows the artist acting out “La Toilette”: bathing, grooming, painting her lips. Before the mirror, she puts on faces and gets stuck in the repeated motions of making herself up. Self-reflection becomes narcissistic obsession. Meanwhile, by twisting a series of controls in the form of lipstick, the viewer can play with the video sequence, manipulating and exploiting the intimacy of the scene. Through the compulsive manipulation of the image, the viewer is implicated in the performance of self-editing, which in turn is reiterated in a ritualized production contingent upon his gaze.
