User Guide to the Semiotics of the Kitchen, video installation, 2007
In the interactive video installation, the artist appropriates the vocabulary of Martha Rosler’s 1974 video Semiotics of the kitchen and, like her forerunner, mimes the use of different kitchen objects from A-Z: she wields her “apron”, “bowl”, “chopper”...However, the new hermeneutical approach places more value on the role of the recipient and his own handling of the object. At the touch of his fingers, he can articulate new combinations and permutations of the signs A-Z in which the kitchen objects are handled in less commonplace ways. Thus, almost as though playing an instrument, the user can cut & mix the video, concocting a personalized medley of mimed and intimated meanings of the kitchen.
